The Ausländerbehörde is your local immigration office. It decides on residence permits, extensions, settlement permits and family reunification. The rules are federal, but appointment systems, processing times and tone differ wildly between cities. One thing is the same everywhere: the letters arrive in German, even when your entire application was in English.
Your appointment. Bring every document on the list plus your passport — one missing paper usually means a new appointment months later. “Vorladung” means attendance is mandatory, not optional.
Missing documents, with a hard date. If you cannot obtain one in time, write and say so before the deadline — an extension is usually granted, silence is not.
A provisional document confirming your existing status continues while the office decides (§ 81 AufenthG). It is not a permit, but it protects you — as long as you applied before your title expired.
Your application was refused. The letter sets a date to leave (Ausreisefrist) and warns of deportation. You normally have one month to file a claim (Klage) at the Verwaltungsgericht. This date does not wait.
You are being given the chance to comment before a negative decision (§ 28 VwVfG). It is the cheapest and best opportunity you will get to change the outcome — answer it in writing, within the deadline.
A Finanzamt letter costs money. This one decides where you are allowed to live.
