The Jobcenter administers Bürgergeld — Germany’s basic income support under SGB II. Most are run jointly by the Bundesagentur für Arbeit and the local district; some districts run their own. Whatever the setup, the letters look the same: formal German, a decision (Bescheid) somewhere in the middle, and a one-month clock that starts the day it lands in your mailbox.
Your benefits were approved. It names the monthly amount and the approval period (Bewilligungszeitraum, usually 12 months). Check the figures — if something is wrong, the same one-month deadline applies.
An earlier decision is being cancelled and money demanded back, often because income was reported late. Four-figure amounts are normal. You can object, and you can ask to repay in instalments.
Your standard rate is cut, typically by 10–30 % for one to three months, after a missed appointment or a refused offer. The letter must state the reason and the exact period it applies to.
An invitation to an appointment — and it is not optional. Missing it without a good reason you can prove is itself grounds for a 10 % reduction. If you cannot attend, call before the date, not after.
A request for documents: payslips, rental contract, bank statements, with a fixed date. Benefits can be withheld entirely if you do not respond in time.
A white envelope from the Jobcenter, eight pages long, and somewhere on page five a sentence that decides whether there is rent money next month. The part that matters is at the very end, under a heading called “Rechtsbehelfsbelehrung” — and it contains the only date in the letter you cannot miss. Most people never read that far.
