The Belastingdienst is the Netherlands' tax authority. They handle income tax (inkomstenbelasting), benefits (toeslagen), VAT, and payroll taxes. All correspondence is in Dutch — even if you're a highly skilled migrant (kennismigrant) who does everything else in English.
Preliminary tax assessment. An estimate of what you'll owe or receive. Check the amount and monthly payment schedule.
Final tax assessment. The actual calculation after your return is processed. Has a 6-week objection period.
Decision on your benefits (zorgtoeslag, huurtoeslag, kinderopvangtoeslag). Check if approved and the monthly amount.
Formal payment demand. Ignoring this leads to collection measures and additional costs. Pay or object within the deadline.
