A reminder, a debt collector, or a yellow envelope from the court? They look alike and mean very different things. One of them gives you fourteen days.
In Germany a payment demand escalates in stages, and each stage has a different weight. A Zahlungserinnerung or Mahnung comes from the company itself and has no legal force of its own. An Inkassoschreiben comes from a collection agency that was assigned the claim — still not a court. A Mahnbescheid arrives in a yellow envelope from an Amtsgericht and is a real court procedure with a fourteen-day clock. Knowing which one is in your hand changes what you should do today.
A polite first reminder from the company itself. No extra fees yet, no legal consequence. Pay it, or dispute it in writing so there is a record.
A formal reminder. From here the company may charge default interest and costs (Verzug). Still no court involved — but ignoring it is how the next two letters happen.
A collection agency now handles the claim and adds its own fees. You only owe it if the original claim is valid. Ask in writing what it is actually for before paying anything.
A court order for payment. You have 14 days from delivery to return the enclosed Widerspruch form. No reason needed, no cost. Miss it and the claim becomes enforceable — even if it was never justified.
The stage after an unchallenged Mahnbescheid. Another 14 days, this time for an Einspruch. After that, wage garnishment and bailiffs become possible.
It is genuinely yellow, it says “Amtsgericht”, and it contains a tear-off form most people never fill in. The claim inside can be entirely invented — the court does not check whether you owe anything. It only checks whether you objected in time. That is why fourteen days matters more than whether the demand is fair.
